The Department of Social Work, Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science organized an orientation visit to “Meher Children’s Village” a unit of Meher Eira Charitable Trust for the first year Master of Social Work Students on 9th October 2019. Meher Children’s Village is an institution for child care which is a group foster care home. Dr. Kalpana Prakash, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work was the faculty coordinator for this orientation visit.
Mr. Davies Jayaraj, Director, Meher Chldren’s Village, welcomed the students and gave an orientation about the home and the background of the children and their functioning. The organization is 27 years old and works for abandoned children who does not have parents or anybody to take care of them. They come under the government approved Child Care Institutions and they are a pioneer and first successful group foster care model (1 home will have a mother and 7-8 children) in Coimbatore. Mr. Winston, Program Coordinator, took the students to show them the infrastructure of the institution and he also briefed the facilities available for the children living there and how members of the home together contribute to unique lifestyle. The students had an informative and an interactive walk and talk with the organization team leaders and they were surprised by the rendering of quality services by the organization to the children where the entire team has dedicated their life providing services for these children. The students also got to know about few acts, schemes by the government and some real case scenarios. The visit was a cherishing one and also was very informative and interactive on the whole.
