The Department of Social Work, Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science organized an orientation visit to “Larsen and Toubro – EAIC Division” of Coimbatore Branch for the 1st year Master of Social Work Students on 24th October 2019. L&T is a leader in major technology, engineering, construction, manufacturing and financial services conglomerate, with global operations. L&T addresses critical needs in key sectors – Hydrocarbon, Infrastructure, Power, Process Industries and Defence – for customers in over 30 countries around the world. Dr. Emmanuel Daniel, Faculty, Department of Social Work, was the coordinator for this orientation visit.
Session 1: Overview of L&T
Mr. Hari Prasad, Head HR, Electric & Automation welcomed the students and a short corporate video was played to understand the core of L&T. He then briefed them about the organization – founders, history of the organization, vision, leadership team, operating divisions of L&T. He shared how the company focus on multiple avenues and how people play a very important role in the growth of their organization and briefed some qualities like professionalism. He then gave an outline on the Coimbatore branch of L&T – its operating divisions, products manufactured, services provided.
Session 2: Overview of HR
Mr. Hari Prasad, gave an overview about the HR (Human Resources) functions in L&T. He shared his knowledge with the students regarding- HR Process, roles and responsibilities, EAIC HR Organization Structure and Leadership team Training centers in our country & globally. He shared some new terms such as Kirkpatrick model of evaluation, Bell curve for performance metrics. He highlighted their organization involvement in Leadership Development model and how they value every person with a lot of facilities and benefits. The session concluded with a short Q & A.
Session 3: Overview of Industrial Relations.
Mr. Ninan, Head, Industrial Relations, ESE, gave an outline about The Factories Act 1948, its key areas of focus like Health, Safety, Welfare, Wage aspects. He also shared various roles and need of Welfare officers in industries. He explained some examples of implementations in their organization as well so students understand the law and practice of the organization. This was an informative session for the students and concluded with a short Q & A.
Session 4: Overview on CSR
Mr. K. Sugaraja, Assistant Manager-CSR, started the session with the Corporate Social Responsibility of L&T. He gave the concept of CSR, some rules and regulations of CSR, he briefed Section 135 of Companies Act, 2013. He shared concepts like Schedule VII under Ministry of Home Affairs, India. He also touched upon the Millennium Development Goals, Sustainable Development Goals. He encouraged students to browse and learn more about them. He briefed CSR operations of L&T which involves the Leadership Team – CSR Board, CSR Policies, CSR Council and various CSR activities overall. He then shared with the students insights of the CSR projects of the Coimbatore Branch of L&T – Govt. School Adoption projects, Model School implementation, SHINE project (for tribals), WATSAN (Water and Sanitation), STEM Education support, Rural Health Development, Integrated Community Development, L&T Public Charitable Trust, Science on Wheels & Science Centre, Vocational Skill training programs, etc. all focusing towards impact and sustainability. He also shared additional activities like awareness programs and Employee volunteering. L&T, Coimbatore has spent 8 Crore Rupees INR in 2018-19. The students also had some questions which they shared and got clarified.
