The Department of Social Work, Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science organized a Guest Talk on Malnutrition – A Social Problem by Ms. Samrudha PR, Child Development Project Officer, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), Government of Tamil Nadu, Sulur, Coimbatore for the 1st year MSW students on 19.08.19. Dr. Emmanuel Daniel, Faculty of Social Work was the coordinator for the program.
The event started with a welcome address by Ms. Sri Vaishnavi P.M, 1st Year MSW. Followed by a brief introduction of the resource person by Dr. Emmanuel Daniel. He gave an overview about the program and encouraged the students to have an interactive session with the guest.
Ms. Samrudha started the session with a fact or myth quiz on some data on health and nutrition. She threw light on Malnutrition and why it is a major problem in India. In further to this, the resource person gave insights on the diverse food intake pattern and an activity was conducted to assess it. She also discussed some international problems like malnutrition among refugee children.
Ms. Samrudha shared some data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) and malnutrition’s impact on the economy. Some videos regarding the existing government schemes were played and she shared more information on health, nutrition and sustainable solutions to overcome malnutrition. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Mr. Divagar, 1st Year MSW.
