The first year MSW students were taken to a study visit to Helikx Open School and Learning centre, Salem on 8 February, 2020. It is the first of its kind in Tamilnadu and is run by Dr. Senthil, a Social Entrepreneur along with a team of Psychologists. This school is accredited to National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and is approved under Ministry of Human Resource and Development. The students had a training programme on understanding alternative school by Dr. Senthil and they visited the facilities available in the school such as innovation lab, library, classrooms and their organic farming area. Three Visual communication students volunteered and trained the children with learning disabilities in photography and video editing. The visit was a useful one for all the students who participated and also the visit certainly ensured the multidisciplinary perspective of liberal arts education of bringing in the holistic approach to mould young minds.
Volunteering with World Vision India
The 1st Year MSW Students in the Department of Social Work, Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science participated in the community volunteering in collaboration with World Vision India, Bengaluru on January 31, 2020. Dr. Emmanuel Daniel, Faculty of Social Work, KCLAS was the coordinator for this program. Mr. Mathew, WVI was the facilitator from the organization.
The students went to the Government school, in which SDMP was organized. The teachers, government school staff, government staff, staff from World Vision India and the parents of the children took part in the meeting. They discussed about various aspects of school development including all the stakeholders in their local language. The Students then visited the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) office, where there was a workshop organized by Belaku Charitable Trust in collaboration with World Vision India. The women in the community were on a 21 Day training program for Tailoring, Beautician and Fashion items for enhancing their skill in those areas for livelihood. The students observed their activities and also had an interaction with the women. Then the students visited Deepthi Vidyanikethana High School (English Medium) and had an opportunity to interact with the 10th standard students and share some tips like how to overcome fear for exams, a short motivation talk.
