School of Psychology Global Immersion @ Asia Pacific University
The School of Psychology team arrived at Kuala Lumpur. The visit started off with a dinner hosted by APU before the official program began. The students were all excited and especially enthusiastic about participating in this cross-cultural learning!
Day 1 :
How fascinating it is to see one’s own brain waves dance from beta to delta to alpha! Students witnessed the real-time work of an Electroencephalogram by wearing it and observing their brain activity on a screen as they clenched their teeth , laughed, and held their breath. It was truly a moment of learning for students!
Experiencing virtual reality to assess depth and height was another remarkable highlight of the day. While VR experiences are not new to many, its application to understanding the phobia of heights was insightful.
Following this was an engaging and interactive session on positive psychology and wellbeing facilitated by Dr. Yati, Professor of Psychology. The interactions explored theories such as Broaden and Build and PERMA. Activities focused on gratitude and positive experience sharing were key moments and students participation was commendable. Overall, it was an eventful day filled with significant learning and reflections.
Day 2:
Post-Zumba, students sat down with three experts of practice to discuss stress—the spectrum from eustress to destress. This interaction allowed for open sharing of personal experiences and reflections.
While they could have given into the coziness of the environment after a sumptuous afternoon meal, students proved their commitment by a wonderful participation in a session on Psychological safety led by Ms. Chitara, Practitioner and Coach, and her team of students. Their introspection of psychological safety through the lenses of vulnerability, judgments, belongingness, and various other similar factors was appreciated by the team of facilitators. They worked along with the psychology students of APU sharing their similarities and differences.
In a nutshell, students have taken back with them significant learning with well-deserved recognition.
Day 3:
What better than creating a safe space to think and discuss love, relationship and intimacy? The first two sessions of the day allowed for discussions and explorations on the theory of love, love language and signs of love. By understanding the satire communication styles, students participated in activities finding out their dominant love language. A deep dive into the biological, social and psychological perspectives to love was an eye opener to the young learners.
A session on experiential intimacy through drama therapy was yet another highlight of the day. Exploring the plot and characters of the Midsummer Nights Dream to understand the psychological play initiated a wonderful thread of sharing and reflection.
A sneak peak into the intersection of cyber security and psychology got as interesting as it could get with probing discussions on the latest trends and threats, the invasion and explosion of AI, and its impact. Students worked in groups implementing these concepts in the context of Human Resources, specifically recruitment.
Heading back to the base!
A bittersweet end that marks a promising beginning. Vis Com and Psychology are set to fly back to their base with a wholesome experience from learning to unlearning!
