One of the most rewarding aspects of academic programs is witnessing students transform real-world challenges into innovative solutions. As part of the Global Immersion Programme at the National University of Singapore (NUS), ranked among the top eight universities worldwide and the leading institution in Asia, we were provided with an incredible opportunity to explore artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning, and machine learning to derive insights into the business industry. One of our students, Jeyanth A (III Data Science), however, encountered an unexpected incident at the airport, which led to an entirely new project – one that has the potential to simplify air travel for passengers worldwide.
Upon arrival at Changi International Airport, Jeyanth discovered that his baggage was damaged. With a clear understanding of airline policies, he was confident about filing a claim for compensation. However, the process turned out to be more exhausting and frustrating than expected—long hours at multiple airline counters, numerous interactions with staff, escalations to duty managers, and continued follow-ups even after returning to India. It took an astonishing 45 days of persistent emails and calls before the issue was finally resolved.
This experience sparked a critical question in his mind: If the process was this difficult for an informed traveler, how challenging must it be for first-time flyers, elderly passengers, or non-English speakers? This realization led to the birth of SkyPath—a platform designed to simplify airline claims, enhance airport navigation, and offer seamless travel support. We are proud to see how our institution encourages students to identify real-world problems and apply technology-driven solutions. This project stands as a testament to the vision of our Principal, Dr. Vijila Edwin Kennedy, and the management in fostering innovation and industry-relevant learning.
While air travel is exciting, it comes with its fair share of inconveniences. Airline-related challenges such as baggage damage, lost belongings, and delayed claims often cause undue stress. Through research and analysis, Jeyanth identified the key obstacles that passengers frequently encounter:
Recognizing these pain points, SkyPath was envisioned as a one-stop solution to eliminate the hassle and simplify the claims process.
